Kimi K3 Bedrock: EU Regions and Price vs GPT-6 Astra
Kimi K3 and GPT-6 Astra are GA on Amazon Bedrock, but neither has an EU geo profile. Model IDs, prices per 1M tokens and what EU teams should use instead.
TL;DR
Kimi K3 on Bedrock went GA on 18 September 2026, GPT-6 Astra on 8 September. Both are callable from Frankfurt, Ireland and Paris, but only through the global inference profile, which routes worldwide. Neither has an EU geo profile. If your data must stay in the EU, Claude Sonnet 5 via eu.anthropic.claude-sonnet-5 remains the option.
What changed on Amazon Bedrock?
AWS added two large non-Anthropic models within ten days. GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI’s most capable model, launched on 8 September 2026. Kimi K3, Moonshot AI’s 2.8 trillion parameter open-weight model, followed on 18 September.
Kimi K3 is a Mixture-of-Experts model with 104B activated parameters and native vision, per its Hugging Face model card. GPT-6 Astra has a context window of 1,050,000 tokens, 128,000 output tokens and a knowledge cutoff of 30 April 2026.
Which EU regions and inference profiles are available?
Neither model has an EU geo profile or in-region inference in Europe. The AWS model cards list only a US geo profile and a global profile. From European regions you can call the global profile, and that profile may process requests in any supported commercial AWS region worldwide.

Prices are USD per 1M tokens, Standard tier, from the Kimi K3 card and the GPT-6 Astra card. Above 272K input tokens GPT-6 Astra costs 20 / 75 USD.
How is your data handled?
The same Bedrock data protection applies as for Claude. AWS states in its data protection docs that model providers have no access to the model deployment accounts, logs, prompts or completions. The residency problem comes from routing, not from the provider.
One difference matters for GPT-6 Astra. The abuse detection page says classifier-flagged traffic is retained for up to 30 days, and with cross-region inference it is stored in the destination region. On a global profile that region can sit outside the EU. Eligible customers can request full zero data retention through their AWS account team.
What does this mean for EU teams?
Our position: use neither model for personal data under a strict “EU only” requirement. Treat both as global-routing services and document a third-country transfer basis if you still use them. For EU-resident workloads, Claude Sonnet 5 on the EU geo profile is cheaper than GPT-6 Astra and keeps data in EU regions. Kimi K3 is the more interesting case because its weights are public. The Kimi K3 License is MIT-style but adds conditions: a Model-as-a-Service business above 20 million USD revenue over 12 months needs a separate agreement, and very large products must display “Kimi K3”. Internal use is exempt from both. So you can run it on your own EU infrastructure, but at 2.8T parameters that means several terabytes of weights even at 8 bits per weight. Is Kimi K3 on Bedrock available in Frankfurt?
Yes, but only via the global profile global.moonshotai.kimi-k3. The AWS model card marks In-Region and Geo as unsupported in eu-central-1. Frankfurt is the entry point; the processing region is not guaranteed.
How much does Kimi K3 cost on Bedrock compared with GPT-6 Astra?
Kimi K3 costs 3 USD input and 15 USD output per 1M tokens on the global profile. GPT-6 Astra costs 10 USD and 50 USD up to 272K input tokens. Claude Sonnet 5 on the EU geo profile costs 2.20 USD and 11 USD, less than both, with EU routing included.
Kimi K3 vs Claude Sonnet 5: which fits GDPR better?
On Bedrock, Claude Sonnet 5, because it has an EU geo profile that AWS says keeps data within EU regions. Kimi K3 has only US geo and global. If you need Kimi K3 with EU residency, self-host the open weights on EU infrastructure instead.
Can Moonshot AI or OpenAI read my prompts on Bedrock?
No. AWS documents that model providers have no access to Bedrock deployment accounts, logs, prompts or completions. Retained abuse-detection data for GPT-6 Astra is stored and processed by AWS and not shared with OpenAI.
